Use the Web metasearch engine for all general searches, to get combined
results from all engines at once. Try to use queries with more than one word,
to make your searches more precise.
If the query applies to one of the following domains: Health or Blogs,
use the provided specialized metasearch engine. Those engines make sure the most
relevant resources for that specific domain are searched.
If the results are listed on more than one page, make sure to check out more
than the first results page. That is especially true for the specialized search
engines. Because only 10 results are displayed on a page, and there can be up
to 3 links from the same resource grouped together, top relevant links can be displayed up to
page number 10.
Sometimes it makes sense to submit the same query to more than one engine.
For example, "pain relief" query returns different meaningful results by using
either the Web or Health engines.
Try to use more than one word when searching, in order to get more relevant results on the first pages.
If a certain sequence of words needs to be found exactly as written, use
double quotes around that sequence. For example, the query "search engines
list" will display only the pages that contain that exact phrase.
To enhance search results, you might want to use the advanced search features,
which are displayed when clicking the "Advanced search" link below the search edit box:
- By default the engine returns only pages that contain ALL words from
the query. However, the option of returning pages that contain ANY of the words
is also available. Using this option will return more pages, but the search
will be less precise
- The search can be restricted to only one site, or a specific domain.
Specifying org in the In site/domain edit box will make the engine search
only the .org sites. If www.firstgov.gov is specified, only pages from
www.firstgov.gov site will be returned
- Adult web search results and ads can be filtered out, by selecting the Safe filter ON checkbox.
By default the Web search is not filtered. For Health and Blogs specialized engines the safe filter is set to
ON by default, and cannot be changed
